Kayaking has given me the opportunity to leisurely explore the water’s edge and the splendors to be found there. This remnant of a dock, washed into the shallows on Grassham Lake, for me, was a treasure. No longer a functioning
whole and severed from its greater half, it lay against the shore, displayed to its best advantage in sunlight and shadow. Each board seemed to take on a character of its own with offset nails for eyes, sticking out at varying lengths, playfully casting shadows. The individuality of each haphazardly cut off board was further accentuated with rusted nail tear stains over top of wood grain randomly split and pock marked. The log itself was a weathered beauty with curvy wood grain flowing from end to end. Mossy bits added a pop of golden autumn colour here and there, telling the tale of a warm, dry summer.
I am pleased to share In the Shallows received a Third Place certificate in the Central Interior Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists Under the Microscope exhibition.
